This weekend I drew many dogs and their owners at Petaplooza in Charlotte. It was my first time drawing pets live! Eric Melton, a Charlotte area caricature artist, invited me to draw with him. We were both busy the whole time.
I will be drawing caricatures at their wedding next week. I arrived early and this is my set up for the wedding. I drew for 4 and a half hours. (I did not get a chance to take pictures of my caricatures.)
Depending on the venue I am at I vary my style and time spent sketching my caricatures. Some faces I make to look like cartoons. Other times I draw someone more realistically in a portrait style. I like to experiment and add more details or draw quicker simpler sketches. I always try to capture the person's likeness even with an exaggerated caricature. This busy college event called for my quick style caricatures. The video is one I did in 90 seconds.
Here is a retirement caricature I just finished. I included the approved pencil sketch and photos of the illustration being inked and colored. Jeff worked for the Parks & Recreation division of the city of Asheville for over 30 years. Everything in the caricature relates to his job. Size is 16" by 20". Acrylic ink and color pencil.
These were drawn with a ball point pen at MerleFest. An Americana music festival held in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. I always bring my sketchbook where ever I go.
Brian, Here is the framed piece. My sister loved it!!! I can't tell you how many other family members want their own! Again, thank you so very much. I will be using your talent again! Linda
Here is Jak from Belgium, "OakHorse" and Chris Marie from Chicago . They are members of DrawingBoard.com There is a thread where members post their face's for other members to draw a caricature of. Practicing different styles and degrees of humor and exaggeration.
I like making simple graphic caricatures like this one of Scarlett Johansson. This was hand drawn with a brush pen, scanned and colored with the computer program PhotoShop. This is a great style for a gift caricature!
Here are examples of how my caricatures have developed over the past few years. When I am looking at someone's face I think about the head shape (a triangle in this case) and how to exaggerate the "T" shape of the eyes and nose.
