This weekend I drew many dogs and their owners at Petaplooza in Charlotte. It was my first time drawing pets live! Eric Melton, a Charlotte area caricature artist, invited me to draw with him. We were both busy the whole time.
I will be drawing caricatures at their wedding next week. I arrived early and this is my set up for the wedding. I drew for 4 and a half hours. (I did not get a chance to take pictures of my caricatures.)
Depending on the venue I am at I vary my style and time spent sketching my caricatures. Some faces I make to look like cartoons. Other times I draw someone more realistically in a portrait style. I like to experiment and add more details or draw quicker simpler sketches. I always try to capture the person's likeness even with an exaggerated caricature. This busy college event called for my quick style caricatures. The video is one I did in 90 seconds.
Here is a retirement caricature I just finished. I included the approved pencil sketch and photos of the illustration being inked and colored. Jeff worked for the Parks & Recreation division of the city of Asheville for over 30 years. Everything in the caricature relates to his job. Size is 16" by 20". Acrylic ink and color pencil.
