2011 ISCA Convention Video

I attended the International Society of Caricature Artists convention in Florida this past November. This video is mostly taken in the ballroom where all the artists draw caricatures of each other. Included are some shots of the "Likeness Competition" and "Speed Competition" and "Retail Competition". If you want to become a better caricature artist join this organization. I have been busy drawing live caricatures as 2011 nears an end. My travels for events have taken me to a 90th birthday party in Greenville-South Carolina, a company sales meeting in Kingsport-Tennessee, a wedding in Chapel Hill-North Carolina and I am off to a Christmas party in Spartanburg-South Carolina today. Below is a caricature I did at the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville, North Carolina.

Here is a commissioned caricature for a wedding couple. Shown is my very ruff initial sketch and a cleaned up version I showed the client. In the inked final I made some more changes like the perspective of the sofa and moved the nurse hat and his cheese. Watercolors were used. At the rehearsal dinner the illustration was presented and I drew live caricatures of the guests.

20th Annual ISCA Convention

I will be attending the International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA) convention in St Pete Beach, Florida from November 13th - 18th. I always have fun staying up late drawing caricatures of fellow ISCA artists. Since 2006 I have attended all the annual conventions.

Group Caricature for Company Retreat

This company was having a retreat and wanted a fun caricature illustration to be presented. The president is in the center saying "Let's go here". Surrounding him are his hard working employees. It was fun personalizing each person. The illustration is 18" by 24" and I rendered it in indian ink and watercolor washes.

New Marker

I am trying out a new marker for my live caricature sketches. On the left is the Markette Dixon marker which I have been using for the past five years. The other marker is the Fine Tip Chartpak marker that I am giving a try. These caricature drawings were made with the Chartpak marker. It does not dry out as quickly as the Markette and I can get a variety of line widths. I did find the tip of the Chartpak is not as flexible as the Markette.

Butterflies and a motorcycle

This is a commissioned caricature I finished at the end of the year. A couple were riding their motorcycles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She rode through a swarm of butterflies and one got inside her helmet. The client wanted the rendering to illustrate the event. The size is 11' by 14" and was painted in watercolors.

2010 Caricature Convention in Las Vegas

For the past five years I have been attending the International Society of Caricature Artist's annual convention. This year it was held in Las Vegas. Previous conventions have been in Orlando, Reno, Raleigh and Sandusky. I had a great time attending workshops and drawing other caricature artists. The guest of honor was Bill Plympton famous for his hand drawn animations.

Downtown Asheville Sketch

I drew this Asheville street corner on the spot last weekend. The location is Pack Square. It shows the older BB&T high rise building in the background that was built in the '60s. Many residents find the structure ugly. The corner shows the brick lined sidewalk. Restaurants occupy the brick building that is pre '60s. Drawn with markers and shaded with a black art stick.

Here is a photo of the corner. Altered the perspective and dimensions of the buildings, the angles of the street and placement of the light pole. Now that I look at the drawing it looks too unbalanced.

I painted a final watercolor making a few changes from the initial sketch.

ResMed Picnic in Greenville, NC

I was contacted by Uptown Greenville, NC to create these caricature portraits for some of their special volunteers. In 2001, Uptown Greenville started the Freeboot Friday live downtown music concerts. The pirate theme series has become very popular among locals and visitors drawing an average attendance fo 2,800. City of 1,000 Easels

On Sunday I was part of the Asheville Area Arts Council's City of 1,000 Easels event. Around 110 artists descended downtown Asheville to create art. I set up at Pritchard Park and drew my caricatures on the street.

Caricature Contest for Carl Mumpower

Local conservative politician, Carl Mumpower, asked Asheville artists to make him into a caricature. Submissions will be included in his upcoming book and he will pick a first place winner. Guess who won. I did! Here is my winning caricature submission that I drew in pencil.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Last week I took a Portrait Drawing class taught by Angela Cunningham from The Grand Central Academy of Art. The workshop was held at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas in Asheville, NC. I learned to slow down drawing from 10am to 5pm each day.

Caricature Gift for the Upwardly Mobile Boss

What do you do when your boss gets a promotion? Give her a caricature. This marketing director was leaving a position at the Brevard hospital to a Vice President position at our local airport. The 11" by 14" watercolor illustration was placed on a 16" by 20" board so her coworkers could sign around it. I included the preliminary sketch that got approved before the final was finished.

Zombie Caricature

This was a fun illustration project. His girlfriend contacted me to create a zombie caricature to celebrate his birthday. She wanted me to included his Fender guitar and having him chained to an amp. Zombies like to eat brains too. The size is 14" by 17". I drew the lines with a PITT artist brush pen and colored with watercolors.

Quick sketches. I liked how the tail fit into the missing pizza slice.

I decided using a circle (the pizza) anchored the design.

Digital Caricatures

These gift caricatures were hand drawn and colored on my computer using Photoshop. They look simple but take from 2 to 3 hours to create. I had to research the themes, sketch ideas, draw the cartoon faces and bodies, get approvals from the client, make changes and color them. A lot of work.

Here is a caricature commission where the client decided to have me illustrate a more conventional portrait. My first sketch I pushed the features resulting in an more exaggerated likeness. 80th Birthday Caricature

I hope I look this good when I turn 80 years old! This is a gift caricature where I wanted its style to reflect the dapper person. So I did not overly exaggerate it and went for an editorial style. The 11" by 14" illustration was done with PITT artist pens, water color washes and Prisamacolor Col-Erase pencils.

I was thinking about the great work of David Levine while drawing the cross hatching.

The client sent me a note saying " AWESOME job!!! We love it, it reflects very well his personality... You are so talented! Thank you!"

Last week I participated in the International Society of Caricature Artists convention. It was held in Sandusky, Ohio at the Kalahari Resort. Here are my caricatures I created. I was number 149. For a change I did most of my work in watercolor. I also made a shadow box caricature for the 3D category. Watching all the other artist at the convention working hard makes me want to do my best. I was happy with the direction of my work and see room for improvement.

Alvaro Castagnet Watercolor Workshop

This past week I attended a watercolor workshop by Alvaro Castagnet.
